At the Norwood Fair

Members of our guild did demonstrations at the Norwood Fair. The fair is always well attended and our members were there to demonstrate spinning and weaving. On Sunday the spinners were there to show their skills and to answer questions. On Monday Heather did a weaving display and demo with a table top loom. And of course there were prizes to be won at the fair.

Spin In 2017

Spin In was once again a successful event for our guild. The day was a busy one starting with the arrival of our vendors. They brought a whole treasure trove of roving, raw fibre, yarn, dyed locks and all other materials to satisfy anyones spinning needs. As people arrived everyone set up their wheels and began shopping through the vendors. People chatted greeting old friends and making new ones. Diane had the tea and coffe ready and there were many treats and snacks to enjoy. As the day progressed we announced all of our prize winners which included gift certificates from each vendor and over 16 specially prepared baskets. For lunch many purchased tickets for lamb burgers or sausages by Karen and her family helpers. The day continued with spinning, visiting and more shopping. A wonderful fibre day was had by all.

2017 Retreat at the Elmhirst Resort

Retreat at Elmhirst Resort
Each September we hold a retreat at the Elmhirst Resort near Keene. Our guild members enjoy spinning and a wonderful social time but our focus for the retreat is dyeing. The Elmhirst gives us the use of the Conservatory where we set up all our equipment and we dye cloth, fleece, yarn, locks; anything that  members wish to bring. This year 11 members stayed for the retreat and we were 21 in all on the last day for our September meeting. At the meeting Chris Muir did a demonstration in dyeing with indigo. Chris and Pauline both had samples of Shibori dyeing and Chris showed us how to make the indigo dye vat.

Sheep to Shawl Demonstration at Blackstock Fair

Eight members of our guild took part in a Sheep to Shawl demonstration at the Blackstock Fair on August 26. We had a lovely raw fleece from Thistledew Farm which we flick carded and combed and then spun to our weavers specification. The spun yarn was then passed to the weaver. A warp of singles in shades of green, blue and purple was already on the loom ready for weaving. We were well received at the fair and many asked questions and were very interested in the process.

A Social Spin Day

Our guild holds regular meetings from September through to June. In the summer we sometimes enjoy a more informal gathering just to meet and spin and enjoy a social time. On Thursday July 13 15 members gathered at the home of Alice A for just such a day. We came together around 10:00am and shared our current projects, helped to solve spinning wheel problems and to share our fibre stories. Only sorry that I didn't think to take pictures sooner.

Spinning at Incredible Edible Festival

The Incredible Edible Festival was held in Campbellford on July 8. The Warkworth Spinners and Weavers were there with a demonstration and display in the Canada 150 tent. We were able to answer questions, give participants of all ages a chance to spin and weave, and to impress people with the idea that these are still thriving skills practiced and enjoyed by our guild and by other guilds across the province.
